From a Crisis of Identity to a Movement of Purpose

Founder of The Melanie Dolls

I am thrilled to introduce you to a mission, that is dear to my heart: The Melanie Dolls.

The Melanie Dolls was born from my own story of brokenness, searching, faith, and healing - and from the belief that Black girls deserve to know who they are long before the world tries to tell them who they are not.

I was born on the east side of San Antonio, Texas, in a very urban and often underserved community. From an early age, I understood struggle, limitation, and what it feels like to grow up surrounded by environments that do not always remind you of your worth.

At 17, I moved to Houston to attend the University of Houston. What should have felt like a new beginning quickly became one of the hardest seasons of my life. I found myself facing challenge after challenge, and because I did not truly know who I was, I began to loose myself. I lacked identity, purpose, value for my own life, and I could not see the light at the end of my own tunnel. I was lost, overwhelmed, and heading down a path of destruction.

The turning point: In deep desperation, I dropped to my knees and prayed to a God I did not even fully believe in at the time. I asked for help. I asked for guidance. I asked for purpose. Not long after, I picked up a Bible. And through the Word of God, I began to see myself differently.

As I began healing, I realized something bigger: the gift of Identity, that God gave me was not only for me. There are so many little Black girls growing up without the same foundation of identity, worth, and truth that changed my life. So many are surrounded by messages that make them question their beauty, their value, and who they are before they are even old enough to fully understand themselves.

That realization is what gave birth to The Melanie Dolls.
